The journey, step by step

How to perform Umrah: the main steps

Use this overview to learn the sequence before departure. Discuss detailed rulings and your personal circumstances with a qualified scholar or your group’s religious guide.

Ihram

Prepare for Ihram, then enter this sacred state with the intention to perform Umrah and recite the Talbiyah. Learn its restrictions before your journey.

Tawaf

Complete seven circuits around the Kaaba, moving anticlockwise with the Kaaba on your left. Begin and finish each circuit at the Black Stone’s alignment, remembering Allah and making dua.

Sa’i

Walk seven lengths between Safa and Marwa. Start at Safa and finish at Marwa. Safa to Marwa counts as one length; the return to Safa counts as the second.

Hair cutting

After Tawaf and Sa’i, men shave or shorten their hair; women trim the ends. This completes Umrah and releases you from Ihram. Its restrictions continue until this step is completed.

A calmer start

Before you leave India

Keep your worship preparation and travel arrangements together. A short conversation before booking can prevent confusion during the journey.

Prepare your documents

  • Check your passport details against your flight and visa documents.
  • Confirm entry requirements for your nationality, visa type and travel dates. Recheck official guidance close to departure.
  • Check Nusuk for Umrah permit arrangements and available appointments.
  • Keep travel documents and hotel contacts available offline, with a backup copy.

Ask before you book

  • Which city do you arrive in first, and how are airport and intercity transfers arranged?
  • What are the hotel names, walking distances and room-sharing arrangements?
  • Which meals, baggage allowance and services are included in the quoted price?
  • Who is your on-trip contact, and can the itinerary accommodate your family’s needs?

Good questions to ask

First Umrah: common questions

How should I prepare if this is my first Umrah?

Learn the sequence above, discuss Ihram and Miqat with your religious guide, and make a checklist of documents and travel arrangements. Share any assistance needs with your organiser before choosing a package.

How do I choose between double, triple and quad sharing?

These describe room-sharing options. Ask how many people will occupy the room, whether you will share with your own family or other pilgrims, and the total price per person. Confirm the actual occupancy when an offer says 4/5 sharing.

What should I check when comparing Umrah packages?

Compare the complete itinerary: travel dates, airline, nights in each city, named hotels, distance to the mosques, room occupancy, meals and transfers. Ask for the inclusions, exclusions and booking terms in writing.

Can I use this guide for personal religious rulings?

This is a beginner’s overview. Questions about menstruation, illness, missed rites or other individual circumstances should be discussed with a qualified scholar. Review detailed guidance before you travel.

Where can I check the latest travel and permit requirements?

Use Nusuk’s official Umrah information and confirm the requirements that apply to your visa, dates and route with your travel organiser. Procedures can change, particularly around the Hajj season.
