about hajj
Hajj is an obligatory Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, that every financially and physically capable Muslim must perform at least once in their lifetime. It takes place annually during the Islamic month of Dhul-Hijjah and is one of the Five Pillars of Islam. Hajj symbolizes unity, devotion, and submission to Allah.
The pilgrimage consists of several essential rituals. Pilgrims enter the state of Ihram, wearing special white garments and making the intention for Hajj. They perform Tawaf by circling the Kaaba seven times in a counterclockwise direction. Then, they perform Sa’i, walking seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwah, commemorating Hagar’s search for water.
On the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah, pilgrims gather at Arafat, praying and seeking forgiveness, which is considered the most important part of Hajj. They then spend the night at Muzdalifah, collecting pebbles for the symbolic stoning of the devil at Mina. The sacrifice of an animal is performed, marking Eid al-Adha. Finally, pilgrims complete Tawaf al-Ifadah and shave or trim their hair, signifying purification.
